I hear a rumor floating around that Matt Cutts is talking again about new Google Penalties…

Some of you say that we should never listen to Matt Cutts because he only tells us what Google wants us to know…

Yet others say that we should hang on his every word, because it is his job to tell webmasters what Google is thinking…

The really paranoid among us are always quick to point out that Cutts worked for the CIA while in college, and that predisposes him to use disinformation to lead us astray about what Google is really doing behind the scenes…

Still others are so super-paranoid that they suggest we should always listen to Cutts, because since his job is to lead us astray about the inner-workings of Google, and he is smart enough to know that we think he is always lying, so he tells us the truth, expecting us to do the opposite…

Regardless of the opinion you take about Matt Cutts and the words of wisdom he passes to small business owners, I tend to believe that this rumor is more than just a rumor.

In fact, after having heard this rumor that Cutts said it at a recent SEO seminar, I am actually quite concerned about this rumor being true. You know how rumors are… You cannot be sure that everything you hear is true… But honestly, I would not be so quick to dismiss this one…

Given Google’s past history with ranking penalties, I think we would be foolish to ignore this rumor… And if it proves true, it will be the end of my search engine rankings!!!

I don’t know about you, but this literally scares the **** out of me…

I currently rank on page one of Google for thousands of keywords, and enough of those rankings are on keywords that make money…

But with this new Google penalty, I am greatly concerned that my rankings will just vaporize overnight, and with my rankings going south, so will my income…

If you own a website on the Internet, and you rely on Google for any amount of income, then pay close attention to this. This is very important information to understand.

When Matt Cutts was talking to Danny Sullivan about new Google Penalties, he strongly implied that Google would start implementing a new algorithm penalty that will soon be known as the original content penalty!!!

Internet Marketing News – Original Content Penalty

Let me start out by saying that this article is a spoof so that nobody gets all crazy and starts a world wide panic. There is NO original content penalty, though sometimes you’d think there was. However, there is a very important message in this article that, if you’re smart, you’ll get. And if you’re reading this, then I know you’re smart. Anyway, here goes.

The other day, over at the Warrior Forum, Bill Platt, who I am convinced should have probably been a comedy writer, started a thread saying that Matt Cutts (he’s got something to do with Google) was hinting that there was going to be a new algorithm change over at Google where there would now be an original content penalty. In other words, and in plain English, if you had original content on your site that was seen nowhere else online, it would be buried in the SERPs. However, if you just scraped your content off of some blog or whatever, you’d be at the top of the SERPs.

Now before you write this off as just a big joke, think about this. Go look up a current news story at Google and take a look at all the news sites that are reporting the same story with the exact same content. And yet, they’re all at the top of the SERPs. Duplicate content doesn’t seem to be hurting them much. Conversely, if you had a brand new site reporting the same story, but in completely different words, do you think you’d be anywhere NEAR the top of the SERPs? I seriously doubt it. So yeah, while Bill Platt was joking around, there is some truth to the way SERPs work. If you have an authority site that’s recognized, you can put up nothing BUT duplicated content and still rank high.

Okay, where is the lesson in all this? Well, some people read the thread that Bill started and took it seriously. Some were even concerned about it. Now, imagine that somebody…ANYBODY…took this thread and reported it on their blog. Or better yet, just started spreading this rumor. Do you not think that EVENTUALLY it would take on a life of its own? How do you think the duplicate content penalty myth got started in the first place? That’s right…somebody started an unsubstantiated rumor. And make no mistake about it…there is NO duplicate content penalty. Google has confirmed this, though there are still people who believe otherwise.

Point is, before you believe ANYTHING that ANYBODY tells you, test it for yourself.

Not everything you read on the Internet is true.

In order to have one’s website become a popular site, a webmaster has to engage in what is called site promotion. Getting the word out about your website, after you’ve built it, is the next most important thing a site creator has to do.

In order to get the word out, there are a number of ways to achieve this. Some are free, some cost a little bit of capital, and others cost a good deal of money.

One of the easiest, and best, no to low cost ways to increase traffic, and website search engine rankings, is through the building of back links to your site. By placing targeted, keyword rich, back links to your site, on as many related websites as possible, a webmaster can virtually assure high search engine results (rankings), and can see a corresponding increase in their website traffic as well.

The reasons for this are more than a few, but the main (and most important) one is this. When the search engines crawl the internet, looking for content, the more links a site has to it, the better. The search engines look at these links as something akin to votes. The more votes a site has, the more likely the site is something that the searcher, based on the keywords input into the search engine query form, is looking for, and the search engines have “learned” this.

An example would be a person looking for sites related to purple widgets. More likely, sites talking about red or blue widgets would not be what the searcher is looking for, and these sites wouldn’t have much content related to purple widgets. However, a competing site about purple widgets, besides having content about widgets that are purple, might have a forum, or a blog, where people leave comments, and these comments can sometimes have links in them. If the folks leaving linked comments, link to another “related” site, the search engines see this, and count this as a back link. Future visitors see these links too, and may visit them, and if the content at the linked site is good, may choose to bookmark (for their friends) your site.
